Chapter 7:
The day went on normally, cleaning the blood, burning the
bodies, checking the area for the infected, etc.. Dinner was dried beef and
canned broccoli. Before going to sleep Mia and Sam talked about their past,
then Sam asked “How long….was I in the hospital?” Mia paused, “The outbreak
began 4 weeks ago… the day the radio and TV stopped broadcasting there were
reports of outbreaks all over the world…” “…wow….” Sam whispered. Then he went
to sleep. The next morning Sam talked to Hester. Hester said he used to be a
biologist in the university. Hester had studied Rage, and Sam and Hester talked
about the disease for a while. Hester told Sam all the effects of Rage. “The
infection dilates their pupils, it also destroys pigmentation.” Other effects
were loss of speech, minor insomnia, and overproduction of adrenalin. “It also
increases breathing and heart speed.” So they continued talking about how to
recognize an infected person, special protection from them and other things.
Then Julia walked over and said “were going on the run, you coming?” “What’s
the run?” Sam asked. “We go foraging for supplies” Hester responded. “You
coming?” Julia asked a little more impatiently.
